Summer Interns

Thank You to Our Summer Interns, Elouan and Maeve 🌟

As the new school term started, we want to take a moment to say a huge thank you to our brilliant summer interns, Elouan and Maeve, for their creativity, hard work, and contributions to Pytch over the past few months.

Making Pytch Even Easier and More Fun to Use 🛠️

Elouan Bourdais, from Polytech Clermont, tackled two highly impactful improvements to the Pytch system, which will make coding in Pytch simpler and more intuitive for learners and educators alike.

The first was a much-requested change to how certain built-in functions are used. Previously, writing a short pause in your code required calling a function like pytch.wait_seconds(0.5). Elouan enhanced the system so that you can now write self.wait_seconds(0.5) directly within your sprite’s script. This change, which also applies to other functions such as broadcast(), removes a source of confusion we often saw in workshops. Elouan’s change will make Pytch code feel more natural to write.

Elouan’s second contribution was one that many users had been eagerly awaiting: mouse interaction support. Thanks to his work, Pytch now includes methods and properties that let sprites follow the mouse pointer, check its position, and detect whether the mouse button is being pressed. These new capabilities open up exciting possibilities for interactive projects and games.

Thank you, Elouan, for making Pytch more powerful and user-friendly!

Bringing Classic Games to Life with Pytch 🎮

Maeve O’Loughlin from Université Paris 8 spent her internship combining creativity with technical skill to showcase what’s possible with Pytch. She built two classic games, Pac-Man and Breakout, entirely in Pytch, and then took them one step further by connecting Raspberry Pis and physical buttons and joysticks to create an authentic arcade-style experience.

These games were proudly displayed at Dublin Maker at the end of August, for visitors to enjoy the games which demonstrated the potential of Pytch as a platform for playful, hands-on learning.

Thank you, Maeve, for your inventive projects and for showing how coding can leap off the screen and into the real world!

Breakout: Use the arrow keys to move!

We’re grateful to Elouan and Maeve for their ideas, and contributions this summer. Their work not only improves the Pytch experience today but also helps shape its future — making it more accessible, engaging, and fun for learners everywhere.

Thank you, and best of luck in all your future adventures!
